Hike overview
The Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon hike runs alongside one of Iceland's most spectacular geological formations: a winding, two-kilometer-long canyon with steep walls that plunge over 100 meters down to the Fjaðrá River. Carved out around 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age, the canyon offers impressive views of bright green, moss-covered cliffs contrasting with the turquoise river below.
The hike ends at an observation deck with breathtaking views of one of the canyon's most spectacular parts, including the picturesque Mögárfoss waterfall.
Once little-known, the canyon gained popularity in 2016 after appearing in music videos, notably Justin Bieber's, and TV series, such as Game of Thrones. It now attracts large numbers of visitors.

Difficulties of the hike
The route is not difficult and is suitable for all types of hikers. An excellent, clearly marked trail leads to the observation platform at the top of the canyon.
What you'll love
- The spectacular views of the canyon: Admire the green moss-covered walls, the winding meanders of the Fjaðrá River below, and the rock formations sculpted by glacial erosion.
- Mögárfoss Waterfall: Accessible from the observation deck at the end of the trail, this picturesque waterfall marks the confluence of the Möga and Fjaðrá rivers.
Practical information
Parking
There is a paid parking lot at the foot of the canyon (indicative price in 2025: ISK 1,000, about €7). An alternative parking lot is located closer to the end of the trail and is accessed one kilometer further along the F206 road (4WD required).
Crowds
To enjoy the site in peace, visit early in the morning. Most tourists arrive between 9 and 10 a.m.
Site preservation
It is essential to stay on the marked trail. Stepping off the path endangers the fragile vegetation and can be dangerous due to the proximity of the cliffs.
