Having explored more than 100 Norwegian trails, I present my top five off-the-beaten-path hikes. These routes offer peace and authenticity, far from the tourist crowds.
The hike up Narvtinden leads to one of the most spectacular peaks on Moskenesøya Island in the Lofoten archipelago. Though it is significantly less frequented than other, more iconic peaks on the island, it is no less splendid.
This climb leads to two distinct peaks (677 m and 688 m), which offer exceptional views of the Selfjord, Stormarkpollen bay, and the magnificent Solbjønvatnet lake. The lake accompanies you throughout the hike.
Take a spectacular hike to Jordalsnuten, located near Odda in the heart of Norway's magnificent Hardangerfjord region. From the 1,043-meter peak, take in the breathtaking panorama: a 360° view of the fjord, the Buarbreen glacier, and the surrounding mountains.
This route was one of my favorites. It showcases the diverse beauty of the Norwegian landscape with high-altitude lakes, waterfalls, fjords, rugged mountains, forests, and a glacier in the background. The most surprising thing? This marvel remains little known and uncrowded, even though it is only a few kilometers from the famous—perhaps too famous—Trolltunga hike. My advice: Go to Jordalsnuten without hesitation! It's much less crowded, more accessible, free, and more varied. It's wild Norway in all its glory!
The Helvete hike leads to the eponymous peak on the island of Moskenesøya and offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the Lofoten Islands, in Norway. This challenging ascent rewards hikers with stunning vistas of the village of Reine, the Kirkfjorden, Reinefjorden, and Bunesfjorden fjords, and much of Moskenesøya island.
Unlike the popular neighboring Reinebringen, Helvete remains uncrowded, providing a sense of exploration and wilderness in the heart of the archipelago. The route passes through varied landscapes - waterfalls, alpine lakes, and lush vegetation - before reaching the summit plateau and its extraordinary views.
The Kollfjellet hike leads to the summit of this small 512-meter mountain, ideally located on Flakstadøya Island in the Lofoten archipelago in Norway. This climb offers spectacular views of the turquoise Flakstadpollen Bay and is an excellent yet little-known photography spot.
Although relatively short, this hike is notable for its adventurous nature: the absence of a trail means you must find your own way through a dense birch forest, ensuring a rare experience of solitude in the Lofoten Islands.
Overlooking the majestic Norddalsfjord, near Valldal in Norway, the Vardefjellet hike offers a concentration of spectacular landscapes. This little-used route is appealing for its excellent effort-to-reward ratio: it provides exceptional views of the fjords and surrounding peaks for moderate physical exertion.
The trail starts at an elevation of about 500 meters, close to the local tree line. This means that nearly the entire hike takes place in open terrain. You will therefore enjoy unobstructed and remarkable views along almost the entire route.
