Hike overview
Baita Segantini is nestled on the shores of a small lake that reflects the Pale di San Martino massif — and the Cimon della Pala in particular — and occupies one of the most photogenic spots in the Dolomites. From Passo Rolle, it takes less than an hour to reach the Baita on a route with no technical difficulty. However, this ease of access comes at a price; the Baita and its lake are among the most popular sites in the Trentino region..

Description and difficulties of the hike
From the Passo Rolle parking lot, take the trail heading due north. After about 500 meters, you'll reach a junction with the Strada Val Venegia, a wide track that leads directly to the Baita.
You then have two options. One option is to take the track with very wide switchbacks that leads to Capanna Cervino and then to Baita Segantini on a very gentle slope. Running parallel to it is a hiking trail that is slightly steeper but much more pleasant. The two routes meet at Baita Segantini and its small lake. Return via the same route.
What you'll love
- The final scene: The small lake, the historic mountain hut, and the Pale di San Martino wall comprise one of the most photographed scenes in the Dolomites.
- The constant view of Cimon della Pala (3,184 m), sometimes nicknamed the "Matterhorn of the Dolomites.".
- The reflections of the peaks in the lake on calm days is particularly spectacular.
Practical information
Parking
A large, free lot is available right at the pass (free in 2025).
Best time to go
June through October. The area remains accessible in the winter because Passo Rolle is a ski resort, but the lake is frozen then. The mountain hut is closed during the off-season (spring and fall).
